Intel vs AMD: which chipmaker does processors better?

There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to PC upkeep. It's by no means an effortless task, and it only gets more onerous as you consider upgrading the various components. It is by no means an impossible challenge, however, as maintaining a PC comes down to little more than a basic understanding of how one works.

Among the most important parts of a computer is the CPU or the processor. If the motherboard is the PC's skeleton, the CPU is the brains of the operation. That said, finding the best processor for your needs is made easier once you determine which brand suits you best: are you an AMD or an Intel fan? The answer isn't as simple as whether you prefer red or blue.

Like the war waging in the graphics cards space between Nvidia and AMD, the CPU market oversees the rivalry of AMD vs Intel. Despite biased hearsay, both company's chips have their own advantages and shortcomings. For example, while AMD typically has more cores in its processor, the cores that Intel's CPUs do have are enhanced by hyper-threading

With AMD due for an imminent upgrade, let's look at how its processors stack up to Intel's Kaby Lake chips, which power everything from Microsoft's Surface range to – according to a leaked patent – Intel's own hybrid contribution.

Gary Marshall originally contributed to this article

For bargain shoppers on the prowl for the next hottest deal, the most common misconception is that AMD chips are more affordable than those powered by Intel. Truth be told, this is likely because AMD does its best CPU work at the entry-level, offering very few options that can compete with Intel's more premium lineups.

An Athlon X4 860K, for instance, boasts a 3.7GHz frequency (4.0GHz with Turbo Boost) for only $70 (about £56, AU$94; as of this writing) on Amazon. For a quad-core processor, that's not a bad deal as long as you aren't expecting much in terms of integrated graphics performance.

If you want, though, you can get something like the AMD A6-5400K for only about $40 (about £27, AU$55; as of this writing) on Amazon. However, you could say the same about Intel's comparable Celeron series.

If you want, though, you can get something like the AMD A6-5400K for only about $40 (about £27, AU$55; as of this writing) on Amazon. However, you could say the same about Intel's comparable Celeron series.

The truth is that both Intel and AMD processors typically retail at about the same price; AMD is only known for being cheaper because its chips aren't nearly as commonplace once you hit that exorbitant $200 mark.

Being known for cores, AMD will give you more for less, but Intel is notorious for consistently outranking "The Red Team" in many cases due to hyperthreading. Notwithstanding, we'll gloss over that in the next section.

With that in mind, CPU pricing fluctuates constantly. Wait a few months after launch, and you'll quickly discover that the Intel Core i7-6800K you were eyeing has dropped well below market value. Still, patience is a virtue easier said than followed – especially when you're distracted by the prospect of shiny, next-gen processors touching down within a couple months.

If you want the best of the best performance with little regard for price, then turn your head towards Intel. Not only does the Santa Clara chipmaker rank consistently better in CPU benchmarks, but Intel's processors draw less heat as well, blessing them with lower TDP (thermal design point) ratings across the board.

Much of this is owed to Intel's implementation of hyperthreading, which has been incorporated in its CPUs since 2002. Hyperthreading keeps existing cores active rather than letting any of them remain unproductive.

AMD, on the other hand, historically takes pride in its focus on increasing the number of cores in its chips. On paper, this would make AMD's chips faster than Intel's, if it weren't for the hugely negative impact on heat dissipation. This could all change as we near the release of AMD's Ryzen architecture (previously just Zen), some examples of which bench significantly better than Intel's finest.

While cooling an Intel processor is a rather straightforward process, because AMD likes to shove as many cores as possible into a single processing unit, its chips tend to run hotter much to the discomfort of affordable cooling solutions. (As a result, you could say this makes AMD chips equally as or more expensive than their Intel counterparts.)

Take AMD's $229 (about £187, AU$317; as of this writing) FX 9590 for example. It clocks in at 4.7GHz, or 5.0GHz with AMD Overdrive installed. Oh, and did we mention it has eight cores?

That's twice the number of cores bolstered by the Core i7-6700K. But, according to PCMark tests conducted over at CPUBoss, Intel's rigid beast still comes out on top in terms of overall performance.

It's only a matter of time, though, before Intel and AMD reach some level of parity. In fact, an alleged roadmap has leaked from Chinese website Coolaler (via Digital Trends) suggesting a wide range of Ryzen processors are on the way, featuring processors that are comparable spec-wise to everything up to the i7-6900K.

If you're building a gaming PC, truthfully you should be using a discrete graphics card rather than relying on a CPU's integrated graphics to run games as demanding as The Witcher 3. Even though we're finally reaching a point where Intel graphics are powerful enough to run Overwatch without a graphics card, there's no denying the wide-open space for improvement.

Be that as it may, if all you're looking to do is play League of Legends at modest settings or relive your childhood with a hard drive full of emulators (it's okay, we won't tell), the latest Intel Skylake, imminent Kaby Lake or AMD A-Series APU processors will likely fare just as well as any top-end graphics card.

At one time, for low to mid-tier gaming, AMD's Radeon chips were far superior to anything offered by Intel. With the arrival of Intel's Iris Pro graphics, however, that sentiment is becoming more and more refutable. This position is only legitimized by the comparatively lower gaming performance produced by AMD's leaked Ryzen chips.

On the high end, such as in cases where you'll be pairing your CPU with a powerful AMD or Nvidia GPU, an Intel processor is the better option. In this case, using an Intel Core i3 or i5 CPU rather than an AMD equivalent can make the difference between 15 and 30 frames per second.

While there is no clear winner in the graphics department, survey says AMD is the better option for integrated graphics (for now), while Intel works best when coupled with a GPU.

When you buy a new computer or even just a CPU, it's typically locked at a specific clock speed as indicated on the box. Some processors ship unlocked, allowing for higher clock speeds than recommended by the manufacturer, giving users more control over how they use their components (though, it does require some precautionary expertise).

AMD is normally more generous than Intel in this regard. With an AMD system, you can get more juice out of a mid-range, A-series APU for a modest price. Save for the $67 (around £53, $90) Pentium G3258, Intel's easily overclockable, unlocked configurations don't start until at least the $200 (£200, AU$300) range, beginning with the Core i5-6600K.

The unlocked chips Intel does offer, however, are delightfully faster than their AMD counterparts. If you're shopping on a budget, AMD offers the most bang for your buck in terms of overclocking, assuming you know what you're doing.

In the case of Intel's forthcoming Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake processor, that means up to 7GHz, according to HotHardware. Again, if you know what you're doing. Where money is no object, Intel's exhibits the best clock speeds around with its unlocked CPUs.

In the end, the biggest problem with AMD processors is the lack of compatibility with other components. Specifically, motherboard (mobo) options are limited as a result of the differing sockets between AMD and Intel chips. While there are plenty of options for both brands of chips, the fact of the matter is there are abundantly more mobo choices with Intel sockets.

With that in mind, AMD's chips make a little more sense from a hardware design perspective. With an AMD motherboard, rather than having metal connector pins on the CPU socket, you'll notice those pins are instead on the underside of the CPU itself. As a result, any processor issues you might run into are less likely to be inflicted by the motherboard's faulty pins. On the downside, replacing a high-end processor is usually a lot harder on your wallet than a shelling out the cash for a new mobo.

Ultimately, deciding on a CPU is up to personal preference. Where an Intel processor shines most when married to one of the best graphics cards, AMD's chips are surprisingly capable without a discrete GPU. In some cases that's all you need; in others, not so much.

Pros: I been a sony "vegas" user for many years. I bought this to upgrade me to the latest version. I did this mainly because I was already familiar with the interface. While the product continues to perform adequately, it fails to wow me, its has become just an average tool in my toolbox. Keyframes being one of the times I prefer this tool.
Cons: I wish I had waited for version 13 or not upgraded at all. Sony rarely provides bug fixes or interim release fixes. And they dont provide much of a discount for upgrading to the next version, and when they do, the time frame in which you can get any discount is too short.
Other cons include:
Is lacking in terms of file formats/video formats supported both for input and output. Lacks detailed controls for output.
Slowmotion is poor and only allows you to slow to 1/4 speed no slower.
Other Thoughts: Just an average tool in my toolbox, but does have its times when it is useful.

Samsung BD-J5900 3D Wi-Fi Blu-Ray Player
Pros: Everything is great on Day 1 with Samsung, but...
Cons: Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't update their security software as Blue-Rays change to remain secure (copy protection). So, you will be forced to replace this unit when the Blu-Rays move to a new security standard. The discs will start skipping and stopping randomly. Then, you will start researching. If you're a good researcher, you will come to the same conclusion I have...F Samsung!
Other Thoughts: These usually work fine out of the box. If you get a new player every year, this should be great.

Samsung BDJ6300 Blu-ray Player with Wi-Fi
Pros: This was to replace an older Sony unit. It is primarily used for streaming and is much faster than the old one. Menus don't hang and when you push a button on the remote the player reacts almost instantly.
Cons: The first unit would randomly reset in the middle of movies or while streaming so newegg was great and sent a replacement. The second unit only locks up and resets occasionally while streaming (probably a memory issue). I expected better quality from 2 of the top brands of electronics but I guess quality isn't a thing anymore.
I personally like the Sony menu better.

AAXA P3-X Black DLP Pico Projector, 854 x 480, 1000:1, 85 ANSI Lumens, Mini-HDMI&USB, Built-in Speaker
Pros: These work great for Halloween window displays, and having the MicroSD card and USB slots in the device is 100% BONUS!!!
The button controls work well and are easy to get use to even in the dark. Works best in a low light or dark room with powered speakers attached.
Cons: Don't expect to use these in a bright or normal light room, you won't be able to see the projection very well if you have the projection to big. The speaker is small and tinny, so it's best to attach powered speakers for better sound, but for a small room the sound from the small speaker may be adequate.
Other Thoughts: The only down side that I have experienced is that one of the two projectors I purchased has a focusing problem, it's not bad but is definitely noticeable. I am currently in the process of getting that one replaced. Other than that, these are great little projectors!

Thermaltake CL-W001-PL00BL-A Pacific DIY LCS PT40 Pump + Tank POM+PMMA
Pros: - Looks great
- Came with everything needed to mount.
Cons: - Port on the bottom is in a bad position. If you need to rotate with pump, it doesn't look well (With all the manufacture's stickers).
- After 5 months, the pump went out. Almost didn't see it in time. When the pump died, I noticed some water coming out of the CPU block / PETG. Since the pump went out, the coolant was getting so hot, it was melting the PETG, creating a leak. Almost ruined a $5K rig.
Other Thoughts: - Worked great up until it went out. And only after 5 months. There should be some warning or beep if the pump ever fails. Hints to the R&D team. I'm very sad to see this happen as my entire rig is Thermaltake parts.

Anyone looking into liquid cooling,.. I recommend putting something in place to check the coolant flow.

The rollers do have to be cleaned every 2000 scans but that's because of a counter.

Canon EOS 80D 1263C005 Black Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm IS STM Lens KIT
Pros: a) This camera is FAR more solidly built than I had expected I initially thought it would be a simple "body upgrade" from a Canon Rebel T2i, but the build quality of the camera, along with the substantial weathersealing that this camera has, makes it a more balanced camera when dealing with enthusiast and pro-level lenses such as the Canon 24-70 2.8 L II USM. This solid build helps also when quickly grabbing the camera, or holding it tight and close to compose and gain the sharpest shot possible. This is in stark contrast to my T2i, which often felt a bit anorexic in the hand-grip area, and when dealing with heavier walkaround lenses such as the 24-105 F/4 L IS USM and the 24-70 2.8 mk2, That being said, I still wouldn't try to put an unsupported 300mm 2.8 IS II USM, or other "super telephoto" lens on this camera without some sort of tripod-based support that supports at the lens, rather than the 80D.

b) AF Performance: Going from even the 70D, (19 AF Points, all x-type) let alone my T2i (9 AF Pts, only center one x-type @ f/2.8), this camera is far more confident, hunts less for focus at night or in low-contrast scenes, and is extremely quick when a good lens is placed on it. Even the included 18-55 STM lens is no slouch, and is FAR quicker to autofocus than the IS lens that came with my T2i back in 2010. Because of the improved AF system, not only are shots easier to get, but they are sharper because of the abundance of cross-type sensors. Further improving this is that the camera now has a 7,560 pixel RGB AF metering sensor rather than the 63-zone IFCL sensor that could only measure in B&W, which helps for color gradation accuracy when the camera is autofocusing and composing the shot

c) High ISO Capability: I find myself happily shooting at up to ISO 3200 on a consistent basis, and even ISO 6400 is usable for smaller (read: 8x10 or less) photos. Canon finally began increasing dynamic color range in its cameras, and the 80D is the first APS-C beneficiary. The result is that ISO 5000 no longer is a noise-fest, and ISO 6400 is usable in lower-light. That isn't to say that APS-C is an ISO peer compared to a full-frame camera (ie: Canon 5D Mark 4), but going from the T2i to the 80D has given me at least 2 full stops of ISO coverage in low-light.

d) Video capability: It shoots 1080p / 30 with low compression, and 1080p / 60 in "YouTube Friendly" MP4 compression. I'm not much for video, so I view this as "a nice substitute for a dedicated camcorder." I'd still rather have a dedicated camcorder that isn't hindered by recording length limitations imposed by EU regulations though. But that being said, since it's there, and it works, it's a good thing. I'm mostly a photographer though. The tilty screen in this regard is amazingl. I have used it to playback video, and when I don't want it for photographing, I fold it away and now I don't have screen flare, and the screen is well-protected against the elements.

e) HUGE VIEWFINDER with 100% viewfinder coverage. This means no surprises in the picture, and the viewfinder is big and bright. This makes it easy to see what will be in the picture and compose it, while having enough room for notifications such as "level" (ie: no more lopsided pictures) and "flicker alerts" (the latter is to avoid taking pictures while lights may be flickering). I wish more mid-level Cameras had this, and that this feature wasn't relegated to full-frame and pro-level APS-C cameras.
Cons: a) My 24-70 doesn't always play nice with this camera. Some lenses may need calibration via AFMA (Autofocus Micro Adjustment) in order to do their best on this camera. That being said, I really have to pixel peep to make this condition happen, and most of it is because I don't hold the lens ideally to balance the weight and prevent "focus shift" due to my hand creeping.

b) Weight: THe same weight that gives it a professional-like feel, can be a bit offputting to someone used to cameraphones and point and shoots. All Digital SLRs have a substantial amount of mass to them, but that mass is good for countering heavy lenses, providing an assured feel, etc.,
Other Thoughts: If I was given the choice, I would buy this product in a heartbeat. I'm not a big 4K Person, so 4K doesn't bother me. I would have, though, liked to have the choice of ALL-I 1080p at 60fps for better mastering and color rendering in post-production. The 80D is capable of using SDXC cards that go up to 104MB/s, and since even ALL-I 1080p/30 only uses 90Mb/s (about 11MB/s), there would be no problem if larger, faster cards (64GB and larger UHS-1 Class 3 cards) would enable an ALL-I 60fps mode that would be 180Mb/s (about 22.5MB/s). This would improve the overall video quality of 1080p, provide a higher-quality master source for social media-based persons to make YouTube videos with (without spending $3k-plus for the 5D Mark 4), and with the advent of 30MB/s becoming a new minimum write speed for many high-performance cards (the SD Association recently released V30 as a new standard), 1080p / 60 ALL-I should become a reward for buying a high-speed, high-capacity card.

I wish Canon would update their 17-55 f/2.8 for a new generation of high-resolution APS-C sensored cameras (and included that with the kit instead). Other than that, this is a spectacular camera and the 18-55 kit lens is no slouch either. It's earned a spot on my old T2i as a backup lens, and is EXTREMELY sharp on it.

SAMSUNG SM951 MZHPV128HDGM-00000 M.2 128GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Solid State Disk
Pros: 4x PCIE M.2
Very quick - meets rated speed.
Cons: I had purchase 2 - one lasted about 2 weeks, and one lasted to just outside of the return policy.
Other Thoughts: As a PC technician, I have installed many Samsung products into new PCs, upgraded hundreds of customers to Samsung SSDs, and personally use them in my own rigs. The retail products are wonderful; these OEM products on the other hand, awful. I'm now stuck with a circuit board that has absolutely no functionality. I still recommend Samsung products, but avoid this one, get the 950 Pro M.2 and you won't be disappointed.

E-Blue PC - Gaming Chair - Cobra-X Gaming Chair-RED
Pros: -The mechanism that stops the lean feature from snapping back the second you touch its lever is nice. You have to actually apply weight backwards to unlock it.
-The chair is very comfortable and the build in lumbar support isn't too much but is nice to have.
Cons: -The lean function is nice but it only locks at a select few angles. It leaves much to be desired when you want to sit at certain angles but are unable to.
-The arms leave a little more to be desired but for the price point they are probably as good as you're going to get. The ability to rotate them is nice for the price point though.
Other Thoughts: There's a mechanism on the bottom that you can twist, and I'm still not sure what it does. I've messed with it but I don't see anything changing. Does anyone know what this does?

Contacted Garmin support 12/1/16, was told that the device can no longer be fixed, and we can offer a 20% discount towards another device.

Was also told that The one year warranty would apply to any device purchased. Unfortunately there is no way to determine the life expectancy of any consumable.

Samsung HT-H6500WM/ZA 5.1 Blu-ray home theater system with Wi-Fi and wireless rear speakers
Pros: Previously I had the vacuum tube audio system, but this one delivers great sound as well. I set this system up with my HDTV on a surge protector. Since they are both Samsung products, I only need to turn on the audio system. This system is easier to set up/program the rear speakers than the previous system. Once this is complete, they work well when you have a show or movie which use them. They are an important part of the surround enjoyment, but as it is, most television shows don't take advantage of this product's ability, but most movies do for full enjoyment.
Cons: The only thing I had to do was reconfigure the rear speakers to work with the type of surround most networks use because the system comes with them defaulted to another setting. This is the only thing I would change.
Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this product due to the price. You can definitely spend more, but the sound this system delivers is definitely well worth the enjoyment.

StarTech.com 1 Port USB Wireless N Network Print Server with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port - 802.11 b/g/n - Wireless USB 2.0 Print Server

Cons: The unit I received did not support any wireless encryption beyond WEP, There were no options for WPA-PSK aes or tkip, or virtually any of the newer wireless encryption options. I tried configuring the unit from it's web interface, but even that was pretty limited, It didn't seem to function at all in chrome and didn't give me any options to change anything, Looked more like a status page than anything else.
Other Thoughts: I suspect the chipset was updated to support Wireless N, but Wireless N isn't useful when you have to compromise and use WEP encryption.

TP-LINK TL-PS110P Print Server
Pros: Was able to use my rock solid HP 6MP with computers that no longer have parallel ports
Once set up it worked pretty flawlessly
Cheap solution
Cons: Not very long cable. Printer had to be right next to router
Instructions are confusing. Newegg advert directs user to web site for updated driver but then you can't figure out which model to use easily.
Smart Installer not recommended so you have to understand network addressing to use properly. Not too hard but wouldn't want to be a neophyte (probably not an issue if you are still using parallel port equipment).
Was able to get this working with computers but never did with tablets, etc. May be my fault. Did have to re-install a number of times over its lifetime.
Other Thoughts: I lost this device due to a power surge. It being the first to go and possibly acting as a failsafe could be considered a Pro.

Considered this a good solution and still do for the price.

Lorell 86205 Conference High-Back Mesh Swivel Chair
Pros: I ordered yesterday with 5-7 days delivery. I got the chair in less than 24 hours. I live in AZ if that matters.
The assembling is pretty straight forward. The chair weighs A LOT! Which is definitely a good thing. It feels pretty sturdy to me. Will try to leave another review after I get to use it for some time.

**EDIT** After using it for almost 2 weeks I want to add that the chair is pretty comfortable. Again, it's pretty sturdy and I really value this!
Cons: The chair seat is a little firm for my liking. I have a very low fat amount on my back side so it took couple of days to get used to it. Not a big deal though. Great chair for the price!

Windows 10 Professional - Full Version 32 & 64-Bit (Download)
Pros: Professional - Full Version
Instant gratification
Cons: All the bad stuff that comes with Microsoft Windows
Other Thoughts: I noticed that a lot of the reviews are about the software itself, it's pretty well documented everywhere so I won't get into that. My review is more about the download version from Newegg and how that went for me. In short, it went great. I ordered the "code" on a Sunday afternoon, hoping I would get the key quickly so I could start using my new computer. I was praying it would come before Monday, and it did. Took about 10 minutes for the email to arrive as a matter of fact. The software itself is not delivered to you by email, you have to go to Microsoft's site and download it, in fact there is no need for the key until you install it. You have the option of downloading directly to a boot-able thumb drive or you can get the ISO image and burn it to a DVDROM. Very easy, especially if you have a thumb drive handy.
From what I understand this is the "Full Version", so if your Mobo has a short lifespan, you can change it out and re-activate it. If you like to build your own computer from scratch, this is important.

Other Thoughts: The actual software is available to download for free from Microsoft's website. They even have a tool to create a bootable USB drive to install it from onto your computer. What you're really buying here is the license key. Newegg will send the key to you by email shortly after your purchase. I didn't even download the software, because I only needed the key to activate Windows 10 on a computer I built.

Pros: -Worked with my 64gb micro-SD card for use with my desktop and android phone (which doesn't support OTG out of the box, so I had to install StickMount to get it to work on my Droid Ultra 4.4.4 rooted)
-Great for desktops without SD card readers (like my mini-itx build)
-Charges my phone
-Great value for $10 + $10 mail-in rebate
Cons: -USB 2.0 I believe

Pros: Price of this card gives you cell phone service for about $8/month for entire year if you use it sparsely. Great solution for emergency phones and those people using land phones for majority of their needs where cell phone is just backup solution for them

Quality of connection with Tracfone is pretty good. Also Newegg doesn't charge taxes or shipping fee making this offer very competitive comparing with other retaileers
Cons: Not good for heavy users of cell servises (Phone, Internet, text)
Other Thoughts: My wife and I don't use cell phone frequently relying on land lines and Internet from computers whenever possible. So price of this card gives us cell phone service for entire making it totally unbeatable by any competitors

DJI Osmo Mobile 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal for Cellphone CP.ZM.000449
Pros: Nice design. Well made and a good solid Mechanical product.
Cons: In the past I have always regarded Dji as a great innovative company. I presently own an OSMO and an INSPIRE. Both of which I truly like very much and they have worked to improve the software constantly on the INSPIRE to add some great features.
Since the release of the NEW!!! OSMO MOBILE I was extremely excited to use it with the new LG V20 Cell Phone which has an amazingly clear 4K camera and audio system. I was looking forward to get it in my HOT little hands and test it out before I took it on a job I would be doing in Las Vegas. UNFORTUNATELY my EXCITEMENT was tarnished by lack of communications from Dji and problematic software inherent in this new futuristic marvel. I have not been as excited since acquired the steadicam which I owned in the early 80's, a model 1A.
I had tried to contact the folks at Dji for weeks prior to buying the device but I could not get anyone to answer my calls. I called tech support to find out how I could reach management with questions before I purchased it but I was told to reach out to usmarketing@dji.com, marketing@dji.com and pr@dji.com. All emails seemed to fall on deaf ears. I even called China 2x to see if I could have someone call me back. I do product integration and I wanted to use the OSMO mobile in conjunction with some other devices to see how they would work together for delivering Spot Breaking news by a reporter when a camera crew is not available. With all my calling I could not find someone to talk to and time was running out so I just bought the OSMO hoping that it was the answer to a BRILLIANT outcome. Unfortunately the LG V20 and other Android hardware has varying issues with the software of The OSMO. Mind you I could not test the results with an IPhone but if you look at the reviews here you will see they are pretty split. My guess is most of the dissatisfied customers probably own ANDROIDS. If you look at the Dji website you will notice the OSMO MOBILE is always being used with an IPHONE.
Other Thoughts: In conclusion I feel the Dji OSMO MOBILE could be a great tool if all the features worked with my phones. I feel Dji could have put more time into the development of this product for the broad base fans of this type of device instead of just setting it free and letting consumers buy the product only to be disappointed that it did not work with their personal cell devices. My Advice.....If you want a gimbal to smooth out your camera moves and you don't need a device with all the bells and whistles that don't work look into some of the devices that are made out of machined aluminum. They are more robust and you can screw them right to a tripod or a selfie stick without having to buy a bunch of other accessories to adapt them. Some of these units also have some cool remote controls and also have follow feature that are not as cool as Dji but they work. OR>>>>>>You could just dump your phone and get an IPHONE.

IOGEAR Model GUC232A 14" USB to Serial RS-232 Adapter
Pros: Actually works with Windows 10 and 8.1. Many other adapters either would not work flat-out with the newer Windows versions, or would cause a bluescreen. This model - when installed with the manufacturers drivers - offers stable COM port access via USB. I use this extensively to program / manipulate routers, firewalls and switches.
Cons: As mentioned above - you need to make sure to use the manufacturers drivers. I've had Windows 10, post-anniversary update still bluescreen using this. It was my bad, just plugged it in and used it without checking - it decided to use the generic MS driver.

D-Link DCH-S160 mydlink Wi-Fi Water Sensor
Pros: Good build quality. You can extend the water sensor by using a simple telephone extension cable. But not much more.
Cons: This product suffers greatly from poor product design.
1) The internal alarm on this is way too quiet. My unit is next to the water heater in the basement. I can not hear the unit when it's in alarm on any other floor on the house. Need to Rely on the WI-FI email notification.
2) I was never able to get this unit connected correctly to Wi-Fi and the Smartphone app. Just simply wouldn't connect. Defeats the purpose.
3) Plugging it in takes a whole outlet due to poor design. The sensor cable comes out the top which blocks the top outlet from use. And moving the unit to the top outlet blocks the bottom one because of the large round size. So plan on dedicating a whole outlet to this one device. Terrible waste.
4) There was no sensor extension cable provided, so you'll either need to get a phone extension cord, or pray that your water hazard is right next to the outlet.

Sorry, D-Link. This is one big design disaster. And I couldn't ever get the Wi-Fi notifications to work.
I ended up putting in an el-cheapo big box store $5 water sensor.
Other Thoughts: Generally I am very fond of d-link products. They're built and work well. I guess every company has exception items. But this product is definitely a no-go. Not recommended.

Smanos L020KIT DIY Home or Dorm Burglar Alarm with 3 x Door / Window sensor, and 1 x Remote Key Fob
Pros: - Low Price, especially when it is on sale
- Quick setup
- No monthly fees
- Relatively expandable
- Battery backup
Cons: - Basic
- Has no cellular connectivity
- Limited scheduling options
- No proximity disarm / arming
- Optional accessories can get expensive
- App loads slowly to disarm / re-arm
- Instructions can be complicated
- Should be supplemented with a video surveillance system for total security
Other Thoughts: If you need a relatively basic alarm system on the cheap, this will do the job, especially if you have a smartphone. Alerts will come in a timely manner, depending on your settings, and while you are away. Setup is almost no-brainer, but I do recommend some level of tech expertise . If you don't like reading manuals, then this setup is probably not for you.

This alarm will only detect intrusions through the door sensors or through the optional motion detectors. Since it has no cellular connectivity, it will not contact a security service center that will then call emergency services. At the very least, you don't have to pay a monthly fee.

It has battery backup, but it's kind of pointless if the rest of your network devices aren't on a battery backup as well.

I highly recommend supplementing the system with a separate video surveillance system. The reason I purchased this is because I wanted some flexibility. Sure, there are all-in-one packages, but often times they do one part well but fail in others.

Also, I don't recommend the Smanos internet cam. It seems to be tacked on accessory, and it needs to be power-cycled every month or so.

V7 DM3GSAD-1N Mounting Arm for Monitor
Pros: supports a lot of weight. I don't have any weight sets to see if it really holds 17.6lbs but I believe it.

The mount assembly under the desk is easier to reassemble than some other designs, though I'm not sure that it is as sturdy

wide wingspan handles 27" monitors with ease
Cons: The chrome tube that enters the base seems to be held in with one allen screw from the back, other than that it is just a tube pushed into a hole.

The mount assembly under the desk seems like it won't last. Its easier to mount the way that it is designed, but I feel it will hold less weight. I could be wrong but watching it bend as I tighten the base isn't comforting.

Moving the monitors doesn't feel fluid at all, It is jerky, uneven. The only part that I have tightened down is the first mount that goes on the chrome tube. The other pivot points dont want to pivot, so much so that the only part that I have tightened rotates any time I try and move anything. I've tried adjusting every pivot screw on it, but nothing helps.

Both monitors move when you try and move one monitor. The one you aren't adjusting at least shakes and bounces, but usually will completely move from its position. I've tried tightening and loosening various different joints but nothing seems to help.

The height adjustment clamp is plastic..... really? 100$ and I get a cheap plastic ring holding both monitors up?

Cable management is lacking in the lower half and ugly on the top half

The monitor rotation isn't adjustable and one of the two arms seems to be weaker than the other. I cannot press the bottom monitor buttons on one monitor without rotating the screen. The other is fine but it's annoying to have to grab the top of my monitor to adjust the OSD buttons. Otherwise I have to adjust both monitors again.

Sounds like a screen door when raising/lowering monitors. No big deal, but I noticed that my other gas-spring mounts don't do that.
Other Thoughts: I bought this mount in addition to a Rosewill RMS-16002. I intended to use this mount for my 2x 27" monitors (1000$ total) and the cheaper, lighter duty rosewill for my 24" 150$ side monitor, since I wasn't sure I could trust it. After receiving both and setting them up, I decided to buy another rosewill mount and return this one. I trust the rosewill stand more and its form/function are leagues better (not to mention its cheaper). I already switched both 27" to the rosewill and it feels better in every way.

Don't be fooled by the price, skip this mount unless you NEED the extra weight capacity and NEVER move your monitors. Fleximounts has heavy duty options as well and I feel that those would be better suited to anyone's heavy duty needs.

Cuisinart TOB-200 Rotisserie Convection Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel
Pros: Rotisserie food is better than I could imagine
Toast is Perfectly done
Almost all of my cookware (measuring under 12") fits
Larger than I thought but smaller than the video makes it look
Holds a full-size bundt pan
Cooks evenly
Convection is quicker and flavor in food not in gravy or sauce like slow cooker
20 min per pound and half slab of Baby backs rotisseried in 30 minutes. Great taste, tender, juicy, not greasy or tough.
MOST Bubble & Brown bakeware by Rachel Ray fits! Not all, but most. Cast Iron dutch oven even fits.
Cons: No interior light but I don't need it. Not a big deal.
Won't fit a 13" pan or even a 12" baking sheet. Inside dimensions are under 12" unless you use a round pan. A bump-out in the back makes it work for a round pan ie pizza

Fagor America 670040380 Halogen Tabletop Oven
Pros: Easy to clean, simple to use, very versatile
Cons: Can be difficult to get the food out without burning yourself
Other Thoughts: Definitely recommended. You can keep an eye on the food while it cooks, adjusting the timer and heat controls is a cinch, and the versatility makes it great for any kind of cooking you want to do. The multiple racks make it easy to cook two things at once, though when you do that it is nearly impossible to get to the lower rack to flip/stir/rearrange the food. If you use the pan to cook in, it's sometimes hard to get the pan out until the whole thing cools down. (Not impossible though, I'm just still learning how to do it without getting burnt!) Warning, this does take a bit of getting used to, as things cook a little faster and getting the exact times right can be confusing at first.

Pros: Bottom of monitor goes all the way down to hide stand.
Cons: Touchscreen does not work
Screen feels like cheap plastic

Screen is tough to adjust, especially for a young kid
Screen may go to zero degrees but does NOT lay flat. It will sit 4-5 inches off desk and is useless at that angle.

18ms response....which would be fine if it excelled at something else.

Kaybles SVGA-MM-6FT 6 ft. SVGA Cable Super Shield with Dual Ferrite Male to Male 6 feet - OEM
Pros: I ordered several different brands to find the lowest RFI cable (I don't want RFI in my radio room). This was the best, even though some of the others have pretty grand and glorious product descriptions. Some competitor's products are much thinner and have tiny ferrites. This one is much thinker, but it is still flexible.
Cons: No issues.
Other Thoughts: Recommended.

Coboc Model EA-CL2-VGA-3-BK 3 ft. Black Color Premium CL2 Rated 28AWG SVGA / VGA HD15 cable, Gold Plated, w/ Ferrite Cores, M-M
Pros: Super inexpensive. Only have used it a couple of times and it works. If it ends up breaking quickly, it was still worth the low price.
Cons: It's a bit chunky

ARCTIC Accelero Twin Turbo III VGA Cooler for nVidia & AMD, Dual 92mm PWM Fans, Patented Backside Heatsink, SLI/CrossFire
Pros: Great price for one of the best coolers around with idle temps around 38 - 40 deg C, and 50 deg C while gaming. I've used the Arctic Accelero Xtreme on other cards, that's why I came back for this project. Absolutely the quietest coolers made. Following installation of this cooler, I saw an immediate 7 deg. drop in GPU temp compared to the GTX 570 HD stock cooler, and a 99% reduction in sound levels. And yes, it does fit the 570 HD nicely.
The back plate definitely works well, you can feel the warmth of it. The included heat conductive pads give a nice amount of coverage, more than adequate. They include a card support brace to compensate for the added weight, which would cost at least $20 if purchased separately
Cons: A big con here is that the support brace doesn't seem to allow for an SLI cable.
The back plate, although extremely effective in keeping the card cool, is heavy. The backplate is also visually obstructive making getting the card in the PCI-express slot a matter of blind luck, literally. On my rig, the fins on card 1 back plate would impinge on the north bridge heatsink, but I used a grinding wheel to grind them down, then painted with power-coat touch-up paint, and replaced the long knurled nuts with standard nuts.
Important to note is that the BACKPLATE DOES NOT NEED TO BE INSTALLED, although Arctic doesn't include any ram sinks, so without the backplate you'll need to supply your own (try Enzotech BCC9 low profile copper vga heatsinks for the power transistors, and Enzotech BMR-C1 for the 10 memory chips, remove the adhesive pads, clean with methyl ethyl ketone, and permanently glue them on with Arctic alumina or copper thermal glue).
Even if you don't install the backplate, the long knurled nuts stick out about an inch out from the back, which will no doubt cause problems with the north bridge. What do I mean by "long" knurled nuts? Think of a long motherboard standoff, and that'll be close. Fortunately, the studs these knurled nuts screw on to are short enough not to cause any problems and require no alteration, at least for a G1.Assassin v1 mobo.
Combining the backplate with copper sinks directly on the chips gives amazing results.
Other Thoughts: Due to the backplate fins and long fastening nut obstructions, be prepared to either replace, or do some machining of, the knurled nuts (even if not using the backplate) with a hacksaw or band saw, or the nuts AND backplate fins if using the plate (you'll need a grinding wheel). I installed the backplate and added cooper heatsinks on the chips anyway. The results were, for me, worth the effort. The Twin Turbo is much less expensive then the Accelero Xtreme and gives idle temps in the 30's (centigrade) with as close to zero noise as is possible. Arctic fans are highly under-rated, they give great windspeed and are the most quiet fans on the market. They make excellent air-flow fans for case cooling!

A general caution to prospective modders: PC boards become brittle with age. Installing an aftermarket cooler such as the Arctic Twin Turbo is stressful to the card, so be EXTRA careful when working with cards that have been installed and working for 6 months or more. I've modded a dozen cards with Arctic coolers, and only had 1 failure, but that's one more than I'd like. If possible, install aftermarket coolers on graphics cards while they are sill NEW.

ARCTIC Accelero Twin Turbo III VGA Cooler for nVidia & AMD, Dual 92mm PWM Fans, Patented Backside Heatsink, SLI/CrossFire
Pros: Smaller temps from default fan,
Easy step by step installation with manual, and also videos if needed.
Dual fans.
Cons: Be prepared for extra thickness when putting card back in case, then unable to reach PCI-E lock.
Power connection, will bring confusion (12v), or (07v)
If lost power connector, be prepared to spend $20 for delivery, but $2 for part. No where to find part, only from Arctic website (Germany). Looked everywhere, even Newegg. Nadda
Other Thoughts: If you are like me, keeping your owned spend good working video card when they were new, powerful, and have a system you could use it on. This is highly recommended to help replace fan. Be aware, of losing parts. Will cost you, dearly. Make sure when you select fans like this, make sure your card is supported.

PyleHome - Digital Voice Recorder with 4GB Built-in Memory, Headphone Jack, LCD Display & Built-in Speaker
Pros: Small easy handheld model. It has nice features and you can connect your own microphone.
Cons: The recording quality with the built-in microphone was very bad. There was a high-pitched whine that recorded every time. Makes it nearly impossible to import audio files into transcription software.

The construction seems weak - thin plastic.

The instructions were not exactly correct on the on/off. If you press the Play/Pause for a few seconds it's supposed to turn off, but it doesn't.
Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this product. I intend to return it for a refund.

Logitech C310 USB 2.0 HD WebCam
Pros: Great little camera I got a few years back. Only does 720p but that's all I need it to do. Plug and play drivers and works with Windows 7 / Windows 10 and ChromeOS. Easy to use monitor attachment that is permanently attached to the webcam. Extra long cord is nice and convenient. Light correction and picture (I'm told) are always great with this camera.
Cons: Only does 720p
Included software is garbage
Other Thoughts: I expect to use this little camera for the next few years still and will upgrade to a Logitech 1080p version when the time finally comes but with today's bandwidth limitations the buck might stop with 720p!

Logitech C615 HD WebCam for VoIP, Skype and video conference
Pros: The camera works well. Clear video, responsive autofocus in good to average lighting, reasonable white balance.
Cons: The captive USB is very short. The specs say an extension cord is included, but there was no extension cord in my package. This makes the camera very difficult for me to use with my desktop.
