Jawbone Up

Update: You'll struggle to find a first-gen Jawbone UP on the street, so it might be worth checking out our Jawbone UP3 and Jawbone UP2 reviews.

Original review follows:

Like love, sensors are all around us. The astronomic growth in smartphone uptake means that most of the people you know now carry around a device that is constantly monitoring movement, light, sound and location. To date, the data captured by these sensors has found limited application, but this will soon change.

At its core, the Jawbone Up is a pedometer, but with pretensions of being much more. Within its "medical grade" rubber casing, the Up houses a number of motion sensors and shares the information it collects with a smartphone app for iPhones and Android.

Beyond counting your steps, Jawbone believes the Up is capable of monitoring your sleep as well. Using proprietary algorythms, the wristband and its software tell you how well you slept based on how you moved, sensing a difference between light and deep sleep and acknowledging when you wake up.

The accuracy of these readings is hard to guage though, and acting on the information it feeds back is entirely up to the user to figure out.

Smartly designed

There is one thing for certain: the Jawbone UP is fantastically designed. Both the wristband and the app are sleek, easy to grasp and a pleasure to use.

Jawbone Up

The band itself is completely devoid of clasps or clips. It is a flexible loop that you slip around your wrist, and it sits comfortably below your hand. There are three sizes to choose from, with a size guide on the Jawbone site.

Best of all, the wristband looks good to wear. Our review unit is black, and it goes with every outfit in our wardrobe, from unwashed weekend wear to cocktail party dress.

At one end of the band is a small, square tip, that looks like mere decoration. In fact, this is the single button on the Up that users interact with. A long press on the button changes between day and night modes (you switch it before bed), and a double-press and hold command starts special modes, like a power nap, or the recording of an excercise session.

Jawbone Up syncing

On the opposite end is a cap with the Jawbone logo on. When removed, a 3.5mm jack is revealed which should plug into every phone that the Up app is available on. Cleverly, this connection is used for data transfers from the band and also for charging -- there is a 3.5mm to USB adapter in the box.

Arguably, it would have been more clever to use Bluetooth for data syncing with smartphones -- the way its major competitor FitBit does. Tugging off the protective cap and plugging the wristband into a phone is no great strain, but we'll always prefer a wireless solution.

A full battery charge is good for 10-days worth of use, should you won't be using the adapter too frequently, which is a plus.

The app

Jawbone Up app

Monitoring the data collected by the Up is quite good fun, thanks to Jawbone's colourful and well-designed smartphone app. Large arrows point towards your daily goals and animate when you reach them; congratualting you on your small achievements.

You begin the Up journey by telling it a little about yourself: gender, weight, daily walking goal, etc. It keeps track of everything thereafter, showing you how you are doing each day, as well as collecting data over time into larger, more complex graphs.

Once or twice a day you plug the Up wristband into your phone via the headphone socket. Doing this syncs your data with the app.

You can enter food into the mix, but this isn't really designed as a calorie counter. The pre-set food options are extremely limited, and manually entering these details is a pain.

If you gain motivation from groups, you can select friends to add to your "team" and watch each others daily progress.

What does it all mean?

Jawbone Up app 2

Not to delve too deeply into the existential, but what does it all mean? Data collection and graphing is one thing, but what are you to do with the information the Up feeds back?

Some of it is pretty simple. For example, after using the Up for a month it is clear that this reviewer needs to get up and walk more. If the average adult should walk 10,000 steps a day, I'm a few kilometres short. The solution here is pretty straight forward.

But what about sleep? Each night the wristband reports on the quality of sleep with coloured-strips that show how much deep sleep you had, how much light sleep you had and often you were awake.

Jawbone Up food

My sleep looks bad -- I think. There seems to be far too much light sleep, only thin strips of deep sleep and several instances of waking up each night. It is interesting to gaze at the graphs each day, but without suggestions on how to act, the Up creates more questions than it answers.

On top of this, you have to take this information at face value, if you do at all. There are several times during the review period where the band has reported periods of being awake that we don't rememberm for example. Is it wrong? We have no evidence to the contrary.

On a similar note, the Jawbone could have a limited use for some people with sleeping disorders. This reviewer has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP machine to sleep comfortably. During the review period, data from the Up suggested poor sleep and prompted a check-up.

It is certainly a long way from being an effective monitoring tool for these sorts of disorders -- heart-rate monitoring would be necessary for starters -- but it is handy for (very) general guidance.

Vs FitBit

Comparing the Jawbone Up to its most obvious competitor, the FitBit One, it's easy to see just how much growth this category has in front of it.

FitBit One

The FitBit One is a key competitor to the Up

When it comes to step counting, the Up feels significantly looser than the FitBit model. While we couldn't do a side-by-side comparison for absolute accuracy, we found that we hit our goal of 10,000 steps a lot more frequently with the Up, despite not changing our habits.

The One's screen is a welcome addition as well, giving immediate feedback of performance. To get a quick idea of how you are performing during the day, you need to manually sync the Up band, while the FitBit's OLED screen can give that information at the press of a button, as well as offering information about calories burnt.

The sleep function, on the other hand, is a much nicer implementation via the Up band. Because the Up is already on the wrist, it's as simple as pressing the button to switch to sleep mode.

The FitBit, on the other hand, requires the device to be slipped into a special pouch that wraps around your wrist and attaches with velcro. Because the tracker is in a pouch, it's much easier to forget to switch the device in or out of sleep mode.

The information you get from the Up, when displayed through the accompanying app, is also a lot more useful than the FitBit version, especially for sleep. The Up app's food counter is also more usable - although not necessarily more accurate.

FitBit on jeans

Ultimately, the Up is a lifestyle product. It's designed to look good, while providing your information on your lifestyle so you can hopefully improve it.

The FitBit, on the other hand, is more of a tool, something that works to enable you to improve your lifestyle. They may do similar things, but if you're serious about accountability for your physical actions, the FitBit is a much more accurate tool.

Verdict

It looks good and it certainly seems to work as intended, but if you were hoping that the Up was something more than a pedometer in fancy dress, then you'll be disappointed. Especially considering that At $149 it is twice the price of most step-counters. It certainly looks much better, and its smartphone app is well designed, but at the end of the day the functionality it collects the same data as a pedometer and leaves the same questions unanswered.

Pros: Lots of features for the price, ran well with 1 stick of RAM
Cons: Only one DIMM slot worked. After swapping around the DIMMs to verify it was the board and not the RAM, it stopped booting up.
Other Thoughts: It booted up right away but I noticed it only saw one of the two DIMMs I had installed in channel A. I played around in Windows a bit then powered down and swapped the DIMMs. It still only saw one and it was the one in slot 2, just like before. So both DIMMs were ok. Then I tried the other channel and it wouldn't boot at all. It would come on and go off after 15 seconds or so. I put the DIMMs back in channel A and got the same thing. At this point, it was clear to me that something was wrong with the motherboard so I got an RMA and sent it back. Very disappointing since I have been using Gigabyte motherboards for year.

Cons: ... until I needed to reboot. I built two different systems with this motherboard, using different CPUs, GPUs, PSUs, RAM, drives, etc. The only common element in both was this motherboard. Every single time the system lost power, it would get stuck in a PSU power cycle until power was removed and everything was allowed to drain. Two different units, exact same problem.

Pros: Low price for a Z170 board. Printed manual included and instructions easy to follow. Bios came pre-installed with F6. Nicely laid out.
Cons: RAM *really* needs to be inserted firmly. Even if the clip locks push in harder!

After building my computer the system would power on for a few seconds and then endlessly reboot. No POST or display. I was really concerned I had faulty components. Luckily I read other reviews about the RAM, pushing RAM in tighter solved the issue.

The upper connectors for system fan 3 and 8 pin power are hard to access near top of case once the processor and heatsink are installed.

ASUS Z170-A LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: Bought this board on Black Friday sale. Main reason was because of the all white build that I wanted to do. Rear I/O is nice and this board looks great in my case. UEFI is simple and easy. Booted up and turned the RAM up to XMP speeds of 3000 in a cinch. Overall, very nice board that I would buy again. See system specs below.
Cons: Wish it has a 1 or more rear USB port(s). PS/2 port doesn't seem necessary in today's abundance of cheap USB keyboard/mouse. Case fan headers that are in the middle of the board are kind of awkward. Kinda makes a clean install with fans hard without possible adapters/controllers.

GIGABYTE GA-X99P-SLI (rev. 1.0) LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: It arrived.
Cons: Specs stated it was fine for the i7 6850K CPU I was going to use for the build, "LGA 2011-3 CPU Support" stated on the box and in specs. After I receive it and doing some more reading on all my new components while I am waiting for some backordered memory, I see that there may be a problem with the 6850K CPU since the MB must have at least BIOS f22 for the MB to recognize the 6850K CPU. I thought I would have recd a later manufactured MB from Newegg but the one I recd had a serial # beginning with 1550. Contacted Gigabyte and they confirmed that serial beginning with 1550 means the MB was manufactured in the 50th week of 2015 and most likely has the f1 or f2 BIOS.

The later BIOS didn't come out until around mid 2016, I believe. This MB does NOT have Q-Flash+ where you can update the BIOS without a CPU installed. I don't have an older CPU to do a build, update the BIOS, unbuild, and then build again with my new components so the only solution is to send back to Gigabyte for a BIOS update. They were responsive and understanding when I called and gave me an RMA to send back for the update. Cost me $23.15 to mail to them, I live on the east coast and they are in CA.
Other Thoughts: Wish Gigabyte and Newegg would boldface this info in the ordering process so one would know ahead of time, but still wouldn't know if the MB shipped to you will have the correct BIOS. Guess Newegg still has a ton of the ones made before the later BIOSs.

I have no idea how the MB will perform since it is on it's way to CA at the moment so that is why only able to give 3 stars right now. Wonder if I will get it back before 2017?

Pros: Easy to set up and use
High quality control

Cons: The design is highly problematic:
1, Primary PCIE slot is too close to CPU, which means you can't use full size air cooling like Noctua D15.
2, Full band with is only available @ first pcie slot. This is true even though you use one gpu.
3, Dual channel arrangement is hard to understand, you must use 2rd DIMM rank anyway to get dual channel.
4, USB 3.0 isnt campatiable with my case and will be fully covered if you use 1st pcie slot.

ASUS Z170-DELUXE LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: The ASUS Z170-DELUXE is without a doubt, the best motherboard i have ever laid my eyes upon. Its SATA 10 GB/s ports ran just as fast as advertised, I overclocked my i7-6700k to 5.5 Gigahertz per second. (cooler: Cryorig A40). It came with an SLI bridge that i have not used, so i cannot comment on it. Lastly, it is very easy to set up any sort of RAID setup. I ran a RAID 0 setup with 2 samsung 850 EVO drives, 500 gb each. they ran very quickly.
Cons: I must recommend you get a full tower case with this mobo. The cover that protects the I/O ports is unnecessarily big. with my case (the DIYPC Gamemax-bk), i cannot use my external I/O shield or else the screws did not line up.

MSI MSI Gaming Z170A GAMING M7 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: -The pictures don't even come close to do this board's justice when it comes to the red on the heatsink and I/O cover it's a very nice cherry gloss red very very nice.
-Has red leds under the chipset heatsink they can be configured to different modes in the msi gaming app (also can be turned off for the stealth build.)
-The bios are really nice and easy to navigate love the click bios
-Has a solid black pcb yes folks it's actually black not deep brown
-Has very easy to use overclocking essentials with the 14 phase power to deliver that stable clean power
-Comes with Xsplit if you want to stream
-PCIE metal plated slots for beefy graphics cards. (I have a Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro on the top slot and it sags but the slot has no bend in it what so ever very pleased.)
-Audio is very clean and crisp noticable a difference coming from an A88X Gigabyte board
-You can take off the rear I/O cover with two screws one near PCIE Slot 1 and near the cpu power
Cons: -Pain to install because of the padded I/O Shield
-Has a hard drive activity led on the bottom of the board near the debug/temp gauge (flickers red)
-Registering the board and redeeming a code for mafia III is kinda tedious I haven't gotten mine to work but so so
-This isn't really a con but those of you wondering what color the debug leds power switch and reset switch are on the board they are green
-Don't have anything else to say because of the love of this board

Other Thoughts: -I would definitely recommend picking this up over a MPOWER or anything else because of the price to performance
-would be cool if they made a silver or blue edition of this board ;)
-Killer steal if you can pick it up for under $190.
-The I/O cover can protect your rear I/O from shipping damages I got mine semi bent and everything is 100% okay, so are the heat sinks near the socket everything is beefy and well built.
-I've been an msi fan ever since I built my first makeshift computer I got BF4 free with one of their A88XM boards, then I owned a z97 G55 Sli both boards were the nicest thing and most bang for buck when I was looking, so was the gaming m7.

GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
Pros: Was not DOA
Cons: Killer network driver/software is extremely prone to memory leaks leaving me rebooting my computer typically once a day at least so I'm not sitting at 96%+ RAM (running 16GB and I know for a fact that I should not be using more than 40% in typical usage). On Windows 10, the Creative sound drivers do not install like they should. I only have sound because I had to manually install a generic sound card driver. Time from power button to Windows starting up is much much longer than my last board even after tweaking.

Overclocking software also does not want to work properly

I do not have much experience with buying motherboards so I am unsure if it is specific to this board/Gigabyte boards but what they also need to do is include a USB flash drive for the driver software rather than a disk. Not everybody has a disk drive
Other Thoughts: I only recommend this board if you want something to be frustrating but not so frustrating that you are actively seeking another board.

Pros: This is an all around great motherboard, but the main focus for my review is to praise the audio quality that I didn't know you could get out of a motherboard.
Cons: I initially had problems getting the CPU speed to stay at 4.2 using their App center. I moved from a higher resolution monitor to a 1080 TV, It kept wanting to jump the speed to 4.4. That has been resolved. Not really happy with the way they address the M.2 slot. It disables other sata inputs, you need to be careful
Other Thoughts: I don't usually write reviews, the purpose for this one follows.

I originally had this in my in home office to play video games, 6700k, GTX 1070, 34" 3440x1440 monitor. The computer in my living room failed so I put this one there to replace it. Now gaming @ 1080 so this system is probably overkill. I using this with my home theater system which is 7.1 surround and 65" screen. What absolutely blew me away was how much better the audio is compared to the box that failed. I have never heard better audio surround or 2 channel from any computer I'v ever owned, including ones with $200 sound cards. Gigabyte has done something here that is fantastic. I use both the surround speaker system and Sennheiser gaming headphones for gaming and listening to music. I've had to go back thru my music play lists, just to be amazed at the improvement in audio quality.

Cons: -odd front IO placement (between CPU and PCIE slot)
- 2 fan headers (as far as I could tell. 1 CPU, 1 System)
Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend it, it is a great motherboard. The cons are not too major in my opinion.

Open Box: BIOSTAR H81MHV3 LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: It was cheap with free shipping
Cons: It came defective,
The motherboard power pins didn't work properly after i tried with multiple PSU I had to have the power pins halfway in to get power that would just cut off and not power back up if i switched the PSU on and off more than twice,
Only the fans worked and the GPU was receiving power but the processor wasn't working and there wasn't a display on my monitor,
but the processor most likely didn't work because the SOCKET PINS WERE BENT ON THE MOTHERBOARD! So I would be fine if the motherboard worked, It didn't have enough fan slots but i would've lived with buying some multipliers but the power button didn't even work to begin with!
Other Thoughts: If it worked.... I would've given it 4 stars only because it only has one fan slot (That worked for me)

ASRock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: It's a budget X99 motherboard that functions. That's a good thing, right? In other news, I can't speak to the quality of the sound because for some reason HDMI audio output isn't functioning with my GTX 650, but hopefully when I go Pascal that won't be an issue. However, I was a definite fan of the backup BIOS, as this made me much more confident when flashing my board because if something gets messed up and the board doesn't even post, you can short a jumper and boot from a backup BIOS. (Luckily) I haven't had to use this yet, but it's nice to have as a feature. It also supports M.2 SSD's at both SATA3 and PCIe NvMe speeds, a godsend for me as I'd already bought a PCIe x4 M.2 drive (for those of you wondering how it runs, amazingly. It's blazing fast, and I'm already used to SATA SSD speeds.) One issue you should bear in mind, though, is that you'll have to flash the BIOS after it posts to be able to boot from your M.2 drive. You'll probably be wondering why Windows has installed and your drive isn't booting (like I was) but a simple BIOS flash fixes this issue and you'll be on your way with your >1G/s speeds, happy as a clam.\

Also, built-in overclocking was super easy using the A-tuning utility (AsRock proprietary) because it links with the BIOS. It's amazing because it has built-in presets for OC'ing your CPU, so you don't have to fiddle with clocks or voltages or anything like that. You just pick a preset and it goes. I wouldn't recommend using the auto-overclock utility though, as it overclocked my 5820K to 4.3GHZ on my air cooler (Lucifer V2) which I didn't think was safe or stable given my constant use of the computer. I eventually settled on a 4.0GHZ overclock using the automatic presets, and I haven't had to touch it since.
Cons: The blue heatsinks? Maybe? Then again I had some Ballistix Sport LT white RAM and I'd wanted to go with the MSI Krait before buying this so I guess I'm in the minority, but I've always wanted a B&W themed computer and I don't think the blue will go very well with MSI's TWIN FROZR VI color scheme (for some reason, companies feel the need to capitalize everything. I don't know why.)
Other Thoughts: I'd definitely recommend it. For the price and features I think it's an amazing board, and I haven't discovered any complaints yet, although I've only had my build for less than a week so I don't know how well it will hold up to long-term usage. I would caution you against using Broadwell-E straight out of the gate, as apparently a BIOS update is needed before this board can support those chips and you can't flash the BIOS until the board is posted, which requires a supported CPU to do (Haswell-E.) So the bottom line is, you need to stick a Haswell-E chip in here and flash the BIOS before you go Broadwell. Otherwise, it's a great board!

GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-X99M-GAMING 5 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Motherboard
Pros: Easy to install, compact, durable, LED lighting is pretty neat
Cons: On newegg's website it says it's compatible with 3000mhz ram, but it is not (unless there is a BIOS update, haven't checked). When I installed my GeIL DDR4 16GB 3000mhz ram and booted the computer up I was getting an error code 60. Tried each slot individually with one RAM stick till I figured out the mobo wasn't compatible with it (after looking on gigabyte's website, compatible up to 2800). Not worth an egg knockoff since I blame myself for not checking the manufacturer's website.
Other Thoughts: Reading some of the other reviews I noticed people complaining the mobo didn't come with the latest bios. I'm not sure if they just got a bad one or what but as far as I know mine came with the latest version. The common complaint was not supporting the 6800k i7 processor. It definitely does support it, I purchased that processor for this mobo and have no problems with it running. Didn't need to do any BIOS flashes.

ASRock Z170A-X1/3.1 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: I've been building systems for decades and snapping in the processor, ram and attaching cables was very easy.

- Plenty SATA 6 gb slots
- CPU Fan header in good location
- Price / Performance ratio is on point
Cons: What you NEED to know

- If you're using Windows 7 you're going to find that your mouse + keyboard work in UEFI Bios but not in the OS. This can cause some major issues, so I'll outline how I went around it below.
- While it has multiple PCI Express lots, I can't install my PCI sound card (SB Audigy 2) that I've been using for a long time. It works and still has drivers for updated OS's but without the right slot, I'm stuck using USB sound or buying a new card for the reduced size slots. I knew what I was getting into though, so this is only a con if you need the slot.
Other Thoughts: Okay, so you remove your hard drive from your old system, plug it in to the SATA 0a slot and boot up your OS with new hardware only to find that your USB slot's aren't detected! You go into the UEFI Bios by smashing delete on your keyboard before the system starts up and everything is working just fine. So what can you do?

The easy route is that you have a CD-Rom, the hard route would be not having the CD-Rom. So here's how you fix this:
- Go into bios and activate the Advanced mode
> Go to USB to see available options.
> Enable legacy USB AND Enable simulated USB but leave the last option disabled.

You're half-way done. Boot up the OS after saving changes and your keyboard and mouse should work. However, since all ports on the motherboard are USB 3.0 and use a specific driver from ASRock, you'll need to put the CD in and install the drivers for USB, including the internet (which won't be working either since those drivers aren't installed).

If you don't have a CD-Rom. You'll have to do what I did. I used a Universal Hard Drive Adapter that has IDE, SATA options and has 2 USB plugs. This device will allow you to plug in your hard drive via USB to another computer. So, take out your hard drive, or leave it in and connect this device to another computer or laptop. Download the USB and LAN drivers, saving them to an easy to reach folder on that hard drive. Shut down the 2nd computer, turn off your USB Hard Drive adapter and then put that Hard Drive back in the new computer.

At this point you can boot up and install those drivers. Meaning you can now GO back into your UEFI bios and turn off ALL of the USB options from the advanced menu. If you don't your keyboard and/or mouse may light up despite the computer being completely turned off. So turn off that Legacy support and turn off the simulated PS/2 / USB.

Save and boot the computer as normal and everything should work accordingly. JUST REMEMBER, every USB port WILL be supplying 5 volts of power regardless of whether or not the computer is turned on! This is for people to charge their devices and as far as I know there's no option for you to turn that off. Just make sure if you have something plugged in that you're giving it power. It's useful for people who want to charge their vape pen, phone or other devices, but I happen to have headphones that light up when mute is turned on (a typical visual cue) so I have to turn my mic on to disable that light.

I hope this was informative, normally this wouldn't be so hard, but without USB 2.0 ports, you're bound to run into some weird situations. You most likely don't have the adapter I have, but they are usually $15-25 and I've been using mine for about 8 years, so do yourself a favor and buy one. If you don't use it for yourself, you better believe you'll use it to save a friend one day.
Manufacturer Response:Dear Curtis,

Thank you for purchase and review.
Because of Windows 7 does not build-in USB drivers for Intel 100 series chipset, it needs to adjust BIOS setting or patch the USB drivers to Windows 7 installation media.
However, Windows 8/8.1/10 does not have this issue.

Pros: - Good for building or reviving a LGA 775 computer with DDR3 RAM.
Cons: - You need to be careful what memory modules you use;

ASRock Z170 Extreme7+ LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: -Easy to install, most components easily plug and play
Cons: -the SATA ports are difficult to manage without removing the graphics card
-the m.2 slots are hard to install without stripping down the components
-the boot menu selection can be a little wacky, not recognizing some drives or not actually booting to the device you choose to boot to. some of this is because I was using a Windows install from a previous build, it was very hit or miss but a lot of that is because windows is tied to the hardware
Other Thoughts: -the issue I have with the m.2 slots are because my M.2 2280 Evo 850 came in a few days after all the other components so I initiated my build without the planned 500GB SSD. It was extremely difficult getting the drive into the slot without stripping down the components (depending on which slot you planned to use: CPU cooler, GPU)
-Just as an FYI, if you don't enable the deep sleep option in the bios, the USB ports remain powered when you shut down the computer. This can be handy if you charge peripherals while not using the computer but if you are worried about power consumption or have mouse/keyboard with light effects then this is how you fix it.

ASRock Z170 Extreme4+ LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: It looks nice. This is my first ASRock board the looks alone made me jump to upgrade. At first I was thinking maybe just board features but really almost every other Z170 board worth buying have the same if not better features. ex. 2 type c ports with the add on and plenty type a ports. I've had a couple Asus boards for Haswell and several Gigabyte boards but nothing has ever beat ASUS build quality. For some reason no one can ever match the quality. Non the less the board does have a nice color scheme.

As far as flashing updated BIOS like others have been complaining about was painless and worked flawlessly. Especially considering the manufacturer website gives you MULTIPLE OPTIONS and WAYS to flash it. Most importantly they give you a help option button that shows you how to properly flash a BIOS. Ive never done this until I got this board. Also has A and B bios switch with separate chips.
Cons: The lack of SATA ports real bummer... Plus if you want to use the front panel add on either have to give up M.2+USB header or use a typical amount of drives 2 and M.2 sadly I have to choose between other drives and my optical drive. This board surprisingly did feel too flimsy like most others do. The plastic trim feels really cheap. I was kind of scared that this would pop of while holding it to lower into my case. I hope that the companies actually look at these or at least they reach out to someone worth matter to at least make a difference. At least make the boards thicker. The features were right on par just wish I could use them like I intended. Then again that's probably the reason you take the chance to buy unknown things.
Other Thoughts: I would really like to see THIS color scheme implemented more. The boards with red and black are just really over used. As well as a White and Copper version I would for sure buy if this sata/storage issue was fixed.

Cons: Doa. Won't even post. Had to wait too long to build it so no RMA from new egg. Co ta Ted gigabyte for RMA.
LEDs on the debug display don't even light up. No fans on GPU just CPU fan . Waited three months to build this and severely disappointed. And it seems it's a bad batch. Lots of doa reviews recently on Newegg.....
Won't be buying a gigabyte motherboard again. I'm sticking to as rock and msi

GIGABYTE GA-Z170-HD3P (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: Yeah it's good if it works
Cons: Yes, cons. my favorite. where should I start?
It worked. it worked fine. after couple of months it just, died. I was playing and in the middle of the game my pc shut off. At first I though it was the power supply. I have tried 3 different power supplies with this motherboard!!!! Does not get anywhere. I have tried both intel i5 6600 and i7 6700. I tried different ram. I cleaned it up, and I came to the conclusion, it died. Just, died.
Other Thoughts: Now here's the funny part. While the mouse still lights up in the USB, the north bridge heatsink gets extremely hot, in 5 minutes! and funny how I cannot get it to boot at all.

MSI H170I Pro AC LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
Pros: Small, layout is okay, looks good, wifi signal is adequate for gaming, bluetooth connections is solid.
Cons: M.2 is a NIGHTMARE so far/ ***UPDATED*** getting better...
Other Thoughts: I want to review the board but I can't get past bios. I have tinkered with the bios for 2 days in order to get it to recognize my Samsung 850 EVO M.2 500 GB drive, which I wanted as my only system storage. I went through forum after forum, downloaded all of the bios updates and installed them from MSI's website and even put the M.2 in another computer to make sure it wasn't the SSD's fault. I CAN'T GET THE BIOS TO EVEN SEE THE M.2 SOCKET WHEN I USE THE BOARD EXPLORER. If anyone was able to troubleshoot this same issue I hope they can share or this one is definitely going back.
Build:
MSI Intel Skylake H170 LGA 1151 DDR4 USB 3.1 Mini ITX Motherboard (H170I Pro AC)
SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2 2280 500GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal SSD Single Unit Version MZ-N5E500BW
EVGA GTX 1060 SSC
Corsair 450W SFX PSU
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 16GB RAM

***UPDATED***
After giving up on m.2 with what seems like a combination of possibly a bad m.2 slot and or a bad SSD. I installed a 2.5 inch 1TB SSD and my hard times were over. As of today the motherboard is performing well and all the features are pretty solid. WIFI is strong and never drops, bluetooth to my wireless keyboard and speakers is great and temps are good. I still have to deduct a couple of eggs for what I think is a faulty m.2 slot on the motherboard but it works fine with its 2.5 inch replacement via sata cable. Despite the drawbacks its not worth taking apart and sending back now. If youre thinking about buying this board proceed with caution.

ASRock H110M-HDS LGA 1151 Intel H110 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: - It works
- It's cheap
- Has the PCI Express 1x slot to the right of the PCI Express 16x slot unlike some boards I've seen (for whatever reason). This allows me to install both a graphics card and a wireless card.
Cons: - Bug in Linux, although I'm not sure if it just a bug with Skylake or this chipset. It will constantly complain about some hardware issue, and beware, it will eat up all of your storage it happens. I don't know what's up with that, because it doesn't happen every boot.
Other Thoughts: A workaround for the bug I've used successfully is by issuing the command:

echo 'disable' > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe6F

Pros: Just look at what this thing has, don't listen to the negative reviews.
Cons: NONE
Other Thoughts: I have owned this board for over 1 year now and havent had any issues. My Build: ASUS Z97-E/USB3.1, EVGA GeForce GTX 980, Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0 GHz, SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III SSD, G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB), ASUS USB 2.0 Black External Slim CD / DVD Writer, Cooler Master Seidon 240M - All-In-One CPU Liquid Water Cooling System. All in a NZXT H440 case.

I'm only posting this review because i'm really surprised by the 3 star rating. This thing is awesome, 5 stars.

MSI MSI Gaming X99A GODlike Gaming LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard
Pros: none....
Cons: I had the choice of doing a new water cooled build around this board or the asus rampage v 10th. since I already had a msi 1070 seahawk ek video card I choose the msi godlike x99. Boy was I disappointed. When ordering part for my new build I went ahead and did all msi parts I could in the build. things like another 1070 seahawk ek that makes 2.a msi dragon sli bridge. a msi ds300 mouse a msi gaming keyboard a msi vga card holder. with all parts for system including the 2 custom loops parts one for the 6850k and one for the 2 seahawks I decided to go to my local store that had the msi x99 godlike in stock to buy. got home opened box and was in aww at the looks of the board it would be perfect for the build. hooked the board up to the test bench for preinstall test.....and nothing......DOA... went back to local store got replacement. Home again test bench and it posted for about 10 seconds then reboot all was well right ....wrong went to bios to check bios version and it was only showing 16GB ram when 64GB was installed. Tested mem in another board fine...well that sealed the deal for me..returned again..came home and ordered the other one.. come on msi I used to count on your parts for my builds. It would have been nice to have all msi parts but....

Pros: None because it will not post
Cons: Just cycles on and off does not post.
Other Thoughts: Wish I would have bought something else but I wanted a low cost PC that will be mainly used for checking email.

MSI H110I Pro LGA 1151 Intel H110 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
Pros: I really enjoyed that this had a 1151 platform and I was able to install 6700k cpu, Dominator Ram, gtx 1060, and 1 sata hd, and one sata ssd drive, running windows 10.
Cons: There would be more fan ports but honestly, you can just use adapters to power supply.
Other Thoughts: Would purchase this product if I needed another Thermaltake V1 Mini Itx build.

SUPERMICRO SuperO MBD-C7Z170-M-O LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Motherboard
Pros: If you care about fake diamond plating, RGB lights, and other gimmicky gamer stuff then look elsewhere.

If you want a quality, professional grade motherboard that does it's job very well at an affordable price then you have come to the right place. Supermicro has a long and well regarded history in the server industry. Chances are the hardware that hosts the web server that is serving this content to you right now is probably using some sort of Supermicro product in some way, shape or form.

Pros:
-Amazing quick reference sheet. Gives a blueprint of the board, and all the info you need to get your system up and going without having to flip through multiple pages in the manual.
-Very detailed manual, albeit you have to use the CD or download it.
-Power/Reset, Clear CMOS, and BIOS reset buttons on the motherboard.
-Finally a Z170 Micro-ATX Motherboard that only has one 16x PCIE Slot! Who wants to SLI in a Micro ATX case?
-16x PCIE slot is one slot lower than other Motherboards, giving the CPU Heatsink plenty of room to breath.
-Well Packaged.
Cons: The BIOS is a bit to try-hard. I did not buy a Supermicro Motherboard because I wanted a flashy BIOS. I much rather see the typical Supermicro server BIOS with the overclocking options added on.

Other Cons:
-No USB Type C on the Motherboard I/O itself.
-Memory spacing is cramped on the first 2 DIMM slots.
-4 Included SATA cables, but all straight connectors. Would of been nice to have at least 2 L Shaped connectors.
-I/O plate is very basic.
Other Thoughts: Would definitely buy again. Gave it 5 Eggs because it's still worth it, even with the cons I mentioned.
