Runway Report: Balenciaga Fall 2017

According to Balenciaga there's a new way to wear your coat for fall 17 and that's one side yanked up, pulled across the chest and fastened at the opposite shoulder.

"At Balenciaga, wearing the clothes inspires new clothes. That's the way we work here," Demna Gvasalia explained before the show. "I went through almost 30 years of photographs of Cristóbal's lookbooks, and in many of them the models were clutching their coats like this."

Several looks were fused together, like a black leather trench, which looked simple enough from the front but turned into a pencil skirt from behind. There were rubberised car-mat bodices and shoulder panels; a branded scarf wrapped around the shoe and there was even a wing-mirror clutch bag.

There was a selection of sweet tent dresses and vibrant sweaters worn over floral skirts, but it was the oversized ball gowns that really stole the show. Based on Cristóbal Balenciaga's original sketches, but reimagined for the present day in modern fabrics, they were nothing short of breath taking and will form a made-to-order offering to celebrate the brand's centenary.

While there was plenty of the brands trademark modernist chic tailoring, it was nice to see Gvasalia add an edge of coolness to what was one of his best collections yet.
